If you’re like me, one of the first things I do is check my email. Sometimes this task takes longer than others as I filter through the abundance of…JUNK MAIL! You know, the 800 emails you get from any business you’ve ever bought anything from. What emails do you keep vs delete right away?
I’ll give you my secret. I look at the subject line. If the subject line isn’t intriguing to me, you can bet that’s the first email that gets the boot. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but let’s face it who has time to click on every email and see what’s inside? The song that comes to mind when I think about sorting through all my emails is “should I stay or should I go.”
I was sorting through my email this morning and two struck my mind, which struck the idea of this post. I received an email from Michael’s saying “Daily Deals” (hmm getting there, but just “deals” alone isn’t enough to spark me) vs. The Popcorn Factory saying “25% off Gourmet Treats.”
Michael’s, you can go and Popcorn Factory, you can stay for the next round.
So how do you create a message that stays?
The first piece of advice I can give is to think what subject line intrigues you to open and what makes you click delete without even seeing what’s inside. STAY FAR AWAY from the one you delete. Here’s a few tips on how to create the right subject to avoid getting deleted right away.
- Offer a deal – without saying free (that sounds too spammy)
- Put a deadline in – like Early Black Friday Deals Ending Tonight. **WAIT DID YOU SAY DEAL and ENDING TONIGHT IN THE SAME SENTENCE? I HAVE GOT TO CLICK TO SEE
- Think of something funny and creative
- Keep it short and sweet
- Tell them what’s inside –Like this one I got from Bath and Body works today that said “3 to give, 3 to keep! Hurry – this ends Today.” See what they did here? They used a deal #1, a deadline #2, and they told me what’s inside #5. DING DING DING we have a winner!
